Batcombe, UK - 22nd June 2001 Graphic Arts industry analysts Vantage Strategic Marketing announce the publication of their latest worldwide study 'Developing Market Opportunities for 'Direct-to' Technologies 2000-2005' The 210 page report covers recent market developments in CtP, CtF, digital colour proofing, direct imaging on press and electronic presses in North America, Europe, Japan, Latin America, S E Asia and the rest of the world, and looks ahead with detailed forecasts to 2005. A longer term 10 year scenario is also included. Extensively illustrated with over 135 individual Tables, the main findings of the comprehensive study include * The expectation that demand for all print will grow at +6.7% p.a. over the next 10 years while demand for offset printing will grow at +4.6% p.a. - the shortfall being met by the new generations of electronic presses, including ultimately, inkjet presses. * The forecast that demand for CtP platesetters will grow from some 6,700 total installed base in 2000 to 21,000 in '05. * The prediction that the proportion of CtP plate demand will expand from 17% of total plate usage in '00 to 32% by '05 - resulting in negative growth for conventional offset plates in North America, Europe and Japan in particular. * The expectation that thermal CtP will come under increasing competition from visible technology as medium size and smaller printers consider the cost of ownership issue when they come to invest in CtP. * That the upsurge in CtP investment over the next five years will see demand for imagesetters and recording film continue to slacken. However, the report points out that there is still a huge installed base of imagesetters - 75,000 worldwide in '00 -which will require film to make printing plates, and that film has not yet died. * Digital colour proofing - especially inexpensive inkjet - is expected to replace analogue as the most common proofing technology, growing from 34% of all proofing media in '00 to 65% by '05. * The installed base of digital colour proofing machines is expected to grow from 53,000 in '00 to over 120,000 in '05. * Demand for paper and polyester plates, which represent some 5% of total offset plate demand, is expected to see a further decline in camera applications, although laser addressed polyester plates will continue to enjoy strong above-average growth. * The number of direct imaging presses is expected to triple over the next five years, but the report points out that the high cost of plate media and the need to create dedicated demand flow continues to deter investment for many printers.
